Community engagement – Nan Hwa Junior High Fishery Education field trip
Introducing young people to their surrounding environment and helping them understand the economic activities that support their communities is crucial. In Hsinchu, mullet farming plays a significant role in the local fishery industry and on the 25th September, a group of 30 students and teachers from Nan Hwa Junior High School, along with volunteers, participated in an educational field trip to Fu-Le Leisure Fishing Village to learn about mullet farming.
Organised by the Hsinchu Fishermen’s Association and sponsored by Flotation Energy, this event aimed to educate students on mullet farming practices. Representatives from Flotation Energy also provided insights into the planned Chu Tin Floating Offshore Wind Project, further broadening the students’ understanding of both traditional and emerging industries in the region.
During the event, the owner of Fu-Le Leisure Fishing Village, Guo Gong-Bao, personally guided the students through the mullet farming ecosystem. The students observed how mullets are raised in ponds, learning about the conditions required for their growth. They also had the chance to participate in feeding the fish and explore how shrimp are often farmed alongside mullets by local fishers. Guo even demonstrated how to catch shrimp, giving the students the chance to practice the skills for themselves.
Beyond the farming process, the trip also introduced the students to the production of seafood products. Mullet farming not only produces high-value mullet roe, but the remaining fish meat, can be processed into high-value seafood products. Fu-Le Leisure Fishing Village arranged for the students to learn how to make mullet fish balls using fresh mullet meat, which they then cooked and tasted.
Tung, the General Secretary of the Hsinchu Fisherman’s Association, expressed his gratitude for the students’ enthusiasm. He noted that fishing is an important economic activity in the coastal areas of Hsinchu, and with the support of Flotation Energy, this experience helped students gain a deeper appreciation for their surrounding environment and the sustainable practices that support it.
Flotation Energy reiterated that the Chu Tin Project aims not only to advance Taiwan’s 2050 net-zero goal but also hopes to establish strong roots in the local community, aiming for mutual prosperity. This event marked the beginning of closer collaboration between Flotation Energy and the region’s fishery industries.
